Sue Purcell, artist and tutor: galleries of paintings, details of exhibitions, art for sale and workshops.

I am an artist & designer, located in beautiful mid-Wales, in the upper Wye Valley and near to the Elan Valley reservoirs. I produce a wide range of both abstract and representational works, and also work as a freelance teacher and mentor.

Living in a rural area for most of my life, nature's forms and colours have always been important influences on my work, though this is not always revealed in an obvious manner.

On this site you can view examples of my work for exhibition, commissions, outdoor public art and greetings cards. I use a wide range of materials in my work, including oils, acrylic, glass, reclaimed windows, mirrors, pebbles, slate and other mixed media, much of it being reclaimed and recycled from its previous uses, something which I always do as much as is practical.

‘Waiting for the Swallows’

Waiting for the Swallows by Sue Purcell

‘Waiting for the Swallows’ was inspired by the anticipation of their annual return to my garden.

This window was the one through which I usually first saw them each year, as they sat on the overhead power cables, presumably resting after a long flight. When the windows in my living room were replaced, I kept the old ones for turning into artworks; for this one, I left the original painted frame as it was, and added metal cables to recreate the previous view out of the window - minus the anticipated swallows!

My ongoing collaborative project with Kathleen Packwood and guests can be seen on 1 + 1 =

Examples of my work can also be seen on the Saatchi Online and Axisweb websites.

January 2016

My new work ‘From a to b TRAVELOGUE’ is in my drawing gallery. It is an abstract landscape combined with creative text inspired by my weekly travels from Glandernol to Pontrobert over six months last year. I travelled through many rural locations and the highlights were seeing the River & Lake Vyrnwy.
